Intellectual property (IP) consists of new innovation, original literary and artistic works, or any unique name, symbol, logo, images and design used commercially. IP owners must implement appropriate strategies to protect these assets from unauthorised use. There are seven ways to protect different types of intellectual property:
1. patents on inventions;
2. trademarks on branding devices;
3. copyrights on music, films, paintings and other forms of expression;
4. industrial designs for new, original, and ornamental designs for articles of manufacture;
5. trade secrets for information, formulas or methods that companies keep secret due to their economic value;
6. right to lay-out design of Integrated Circuit (IC) for original lay-out design of integrated circuit;
7. plant variety protection/plant patents for invented or discovered, asexually reproduced plant varieties.
Intellectual property rights shall be deemed to be movable assets. A copyright, trademark, design right, patent, trade secret, right to lay-out design of IC and plant patent may move or be transferred either in whole or in part by:
a. inheritance;
b. donation;
c. testament;
d. written agreement; or
e. other reasons justified by laws and regulations.

PATENT
Any product or process, or refining and developing product or process can be applied for patents as long as they are new, involve inventive step and industrially applicable. As to simple patent application, in addition to simple products and mechanical devices, simple methods can also be applied for patents. TRADEMARK
TRADEMARK registration protects distinctive signs that can be displayed graphically in the form of images, logos, names, words, letters, numbers, color composition, in the form of two (2) dimensions and/or 3 (three) dimensions, sound, hologram, or a combination of the two (2 ) or more of these elements to distinguish the goods and/or services produced by a person or legal entity in the trading of goods and/or services. INDUSTRIAL DESIGN
INDUSTRIAL DESIGN registration protects a creation on the shape, configuration, or the composition of lines or colors, or lines and colors, or the combination thereof in a three or two dimensional form which gives aesthetic impression and can be realized in a three or two dimensional pattern and used to produce a products, goods or an industrial commodity and a handy craft. COPYRIGHT
COPYRIGHT protects original works of authorship including literary, dramatic, musical, and artistic works, such as songs or music, novels, computer software, photography, drawings, data-base, translations and cinematographic works.
